Better than Flipper

I’m no eco- or animal- conservationist. I do believe in moderation and I do believe in balancing human influence and nature. But I cannot shake off the burning desire to swim with dolphins. And what I want, I try to make happen when the opportunity arises.

It seems to me that more and more dolphin swim programs have popped up the last decade. I know it’s becoming more touristy but I can’t help it. The least I can do is pick a program that makes sense and I ended up with the Dolphin Watch & Nature Tours in Picton, New Zealand. I’m OK with not shaking hands/flippers with Flipper. The fact that they are wild is awesome as it is.

One thing they don’t tell you in the brochures: you’re supposed to sing through your snorkel mask to get those creatures to swim around you. I’m ashamed to say all I can think of were Christmas carols. Let’s just say between the bad music selection and my off-key singing skills, other swimmer was more popular with the dolphins. They kept peering me with this “WTF” sidelong glance. And they have big expressive eyes. Hey, whatever gets their attention. I guess I can say it worked, sorta.
