Zoos I like because they are big enough to stroll around for an afternoon. But after a while they are all the same. Except Asahiyama Zoo, two hours north of Sapporo, Japan. Being Japan’s northern most zoo, in the winter, the climate is much closer to many polar animals’ natural environment. Polar bear, seals, penguins all were very active and playful in the cold weather. I loved it.
The zoo also has a penguin walk. They let the empire penguins out twice a day to walk a loop around part of the zoo, right in the open. Spectators can line up along the path, squat at the sidelines, up close to the birds as they walk by. How cool is that?
